Thats not the impression I have at all. Over the years I heard so many talks from gospel hobbies as to be careful what we read, etc to everything in between.
I don't know who gave those talks that you refer to, but it wasn't the Prophet Joseph Smith:
"I advise all to go on to perfection, and search deeper and deeper into the mysteries of Godliness." (Joseph Smith, quoted in Smith, Joseph Fielding, comp. and ed., Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 364)
"The glory of God is intelligence, or, in other words, light and truth." (D&C 93:36)
Please note that the Lord does not say that the glory of God is ignorance.
"A man is saved no faster than he gets knowledge, for if he does not get knowledge, he will be brought into captivity by some evil power in the other world, as evil spirits will have more knowledge, and consequently more power than many men who are on the earth. Hence, it needs revelation to assist us, and give us knowledge of the things of God." (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 217)
"In knowledge there is power. God has more power than all other beings, because he has greater knowledge; and hence he knows how to subject all other beings to Him. He has power over all." (tpjs p. 288)
"Add to your faith knowedge, etc. The principle of knowedge is the principle of salvation. The principle can be comprehended by the faithful and diligent; and every one that does not obtain knowledge sufficient to be saved will be condemned." (tpjs p. 297)
The time to avoid the mysteries is when we are teaching investigators. It would be wrong to cast pearls before swine, but that doesn't mean that we should avoid trying to learn all we can ourselves.
