Do you find yourself repeating this statement when someone has questions you don't have the answers for? Who are we to say what is and what is not important for our Salvation? I hear this statement a lot of times to discourage doctrine discussion  some members may consider "too deep". What are your thoughts?

I think it means that that person does not know the answer but doesn't want to admit it.  If our goal is to become like God, and God knows all things, then there is nothing that is not essential for our salvation, although admittedly some things are more important than others.

No I don't repeat it I find it a little frustrating at times because it seems to be used with the purpose of ending a conversation.

That is one of the statements that bother me the most in the church.  If its not important why did the prophets see fit to bother teaching on "deeper doctrines" ? Why would Joseph Smith have wasted the time asking HF and seeking if it was not important? And further more, why would Heavenly Father reveal things and encourage us over and over and over in the scriptures to knock and seek.  And those who do shall have eternal life.  I can understand that discussing some topics can sometimes cause people issues or people get so wrapped up in one thing or bothered by something because they dont understand it fully and it can be a stumbling block.  I can understand that but some people seem to use early statements by the brethren when discouraging talking about such topics as an excuse not to seek further and they come to the conclusion those things are not important.  It bothers me a lot.  And maybe its not super significant to your Salvation but it certainly is to your exaltation and those are two different things.

Ahhhh don't you just love when self-righteous members like to tell you what you should discuss or study and what you shouldn't?  Roll Eyes My gosh they need to let the people decide for themselves you know what am I saying?
