Mormon Doctrine "Don't try to tear down other people's religion about their ears, Build up your own perfect structure of truth, and invite your listeners to enter in and enjoy it's glories." -- Brigham Young

"Now hear it, O inhabitants of the earth, Jew and Gentile, Saint and sinner! When our father Adam came into the garden of Eden, he came into it with a celestial body, and brought Eve, one of his wives, with him. He helped to make and organize this world. He is michael, the Archangel, the ancient of days! about whom holy men have written and spoken--HE is our father and our GOD, and the only God with whom WE have to do". (this can be found in "Journal of Discourses" 1:50,51--sermon by Brigham Young).

I am not a Mormon, but do have a question regarding doctrine.  The above quote from Brigham young states that Adam came into the garden and was Michael the Archangel.  He then states that Adam is "our Father and our God, and the only God with whom we have to do".  So, Brigham Young is teaching that Adam was once an archangel who came to the earth, and then, through Adam, then became the God of this earth.

My question is---do Mormons believe this today?  If so, why?--how can Adam be God?  And if not, how can you continue to call Brigham young a prophet if he was teaching false or unaccepted doctrine?  Hopefully you can address this because it is from "Journal of Discourses".  This is a real question---I am very curious as to what the answer will be.
some believe it some have probably never heard of it, it is a very difficult doctrine to understand, milk before meat.

It hard to tell the true meaning of what Brigham Young was trying to teach.  But its pretty clear from reading more then just one talk by Brigham Young, he understood the relationship between Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ, and Michael or Adam.

I hope nobody is so quick to judge a prophet by one talk of what he says (considering he was a prophet for 40 years wasn’t he).

So lets get to the doctrine of what we do know.
In the Doctrine and Covenants (a collection of Revelations given mostly to Joseph Smith) teaches this.

Quote
(Doctrine and Covenants 107:53-56.)
53 Three years previous to the death of Adam, he called Seth, Enos, Cainan, Mahalaleel, Jared, Enoch, and Methuselah, who were all high priests, with the residue of his posterity who were righteous, into the valley of Adam-ondi-Ahman, and there bestowed upon them his last blessing.
54 And the Lord appeared unto them, and they rose up and blessed Adam, and called him Michael, the prince, the archangel.
55 And the Lord administered comfort unto Adam, and said unto him: I have set thee to be at the head; a multitude of nations shall come of thee, and thou art a prince over them forever.
56 And Adam stood up in the midst of the congregation; and, notwithstanding he was bowed down with age, being full of the Holy Ghost, predicted whatsoever should befall his posterity unto the latest generation.

So before Adam was to die, he called all his children before him.  He gave them one last blessing.  During this event, Jesus Christ appears and calls Adam the “Head” of nations, and prince over them forever.
Now, sense you seem to have  copy of this talk by Brigham Young (I’m going to assume you have done more research then just copy and paste)  if you read Brigham young’s full talk with this scripture in mind that Adam is really the head of Human race, or really the father of human race.  You well understand better what Brigham Young was saying.
Would I use the term God to describe Adam, probably not, but during Brigham Young’s time I can see him using it.  How High up Adam truly is, using the term God isn’t that far fetches when we realize our relationship to Adam.
This does not mean Adam is god, its means he is like a God to us, (we are depended on him because he is the father of the human race, and a prince over us).

I think Brigham Young understood this relationship better (being a prophet) then any of us could completely understand.
Read the rest of the talk and you well understand where Brigham Young was coming from.

Brick, I know you're reading a quote from the JOD, I would suggest you to go online and read more about it because clearly Brigham Young later on around the same pages talk of Adam and God as two different individuals (I could look for the quotes but I trust you will find it yoursef Wink )

Happy_LDS---

Thanks---I did go on line.  Here is a good link:

http://en.fairmormon.org/Adam-God

It appears that Brigham Young and Joseph Smith both at one time taught that Adam
is now the God of this planet.  And that Jesus Christ is Adam's son.

I can understand why.  If you have "prophet's" stating things that the church later disagrees
with, you better not consider it part of the official doctrine.  Wink

No brick, it's called separating opinion from doctrine. Prophets are MEN. Cool

Happy_LDS---

Read the definition of a "prophet" in the Old testament of the Bible.  If everything he
says comes true, he is a prophet, if one thing fails, he is a false prophet, and he is to be stoned to death.  Joseph actually should have been stoned before he got shot.  Prophets may be just
"men", but sometimes, like Brigham Young, they wield unquestioned authority for a while. It is definitely a place of power that can be abused.
